1. INFO - YOU OLD SALTS CAN SKIP THIS SECTION.
WHEN I FIRST HEARD OF THESE DOOM ADD-ONS I WAS INTRIGUED BY THE IDEA,SO
I DOWNLOADED A COUPLE OF ZIPS, THEN SPENT THE NEXT TWO DAYS BROWSING THROUGH
TEXT FILES TRYING TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO USE THEM. SO, STEP-BY-STEP, HERE IS
HOW IT'S DONE.
A. THIS FILE IS FOR REGISTERED DOOM 2, VERSION 1.7A. UPGRADE IS AVAILABLE
FROM APOGEE BBS.
B. TO USE THIS FILE YOU NEED DEHACKED 2.2, ALSO AVAILABLE FROM APOGEE BBS.
IF YOU DON'T HAVE IT, STOP HERE, DOWNLOAD IT AND INSTALL IT.
C. WARNING - THIS PROGRAM WILL ALTER YOUR DOOM2.EXE FILE! IT IS VERY
IMPORTANT TO MAKE A BACKUP COPY , A PKZIP, OR A COPY IN ANOTHER DIRECTORY
OF THE D00M2.EXE FILE, PREFERABLY WITH THE READ-ONLY ATTRIBUTE SET.
THIS WILL SAVE YOU FROM HAVING TO RE-INSTALL THE ENTIRE GAME IF SOMETHING
CRASHES. YOU DON'T HAVE TO BACKUP ANYTHING ELSE, THIS IS THE ONLY FILE
THAT GETS HACKED.
D. IN YOUR DOOM 2 DIRECTORY, CREATE A SUBDIRECTORY CALLED PATCHES.
E. COPY OR MOVE THE BOOM17A.DEH FILE INTO \DOOM2\PATCHES.
F. OPEN UP DEHACKED, AND PRESS THE "S" KEY. IN THE DIALOG BOX TYPE
"NORML17A.DEH". THIS IS AN EXTRA PRECAUTION, AND ALSO GIVES THE EDITOR
A NORMAL FILE TO COMPARE WITH, AND TO RESTORE THE HACKED FILE TO IT'S
ORIGINAL FORM. THIS COMPLETES THE PREPARATION WORK.
G. PRESS THE "L" KEY. IN THE DIALOG BOX TYPE "BOOM17A.DEH". THIS WILL
LOAD THE FILE INTO THE EDITOR.
H. PRESS THE "W" KEY. THIS WILL WRITE THE CHANGES INTO THE DOOM2.EXE FILE.
I. EXIT DEHACKED (ESCAPE KEY) AND RUN DOOM 2.
2. CHANGES. I HACKED SOME OF THE WEAPONS FOR A SLIGHTLY FASTER RATE OF FIRE
AND INCREASED AMMO AMOUNTS, WITHOUT GOING TO THE EXTREMES THAT "SUPRWEP6"
DID. I TRIED THAT FILE, AND OTHERS LIKE IT, BUT FOR ME THEY TURNED DOOM INTO
A NINTENDO GAME AND REMOVED ALL THE CHALLENGE. THE PRIMARY WEAPON IN THIS
ONE IS THE SHOTGUN, WITH THE OTHERS ONLY USED IN SPECIAL SITUATIONS OR WHEN
LOW ON SHELLS. I ESPECIALLY INCREASED THE BULLETS IN THE AMMO BOXES, BECAUSE
THE CLIPS ARE EXPLOSIVE AND YOU CAN NO LONGER PICK THEM UP. IN ADDITION TO
THE AMMO CLIPS, THE COLUMNS, CANDLES, TORCHES, BLUE BOTTLES AND GREEN HELMETS
ARE ALSO EXPLOSIVE, AS ARE THE IMPS AND CACODEMONS. I ALSO CHANGED THE MASS
OF VARIOUS OBJECTS, INCLUDING THE PLAYER. THIS MAKES FOR SOME RATHER ENTER-
TANING CHAIN REACTIONS, WITH BODIES AND EXPLOSIVE DEVICES FLYING IN ALL
DIRECTIONS. THIS CHANGES THE TACTICAL FLOW OF THE GAME, BECAUSE YOU HAVE TO
BE CAREFUL NOT TO GET CAUGHT IN EXPLOSIONS OR BLOWN INTO A SLIME PIT.
IF YOU STOP SHOOTING AT A TROOPER WHEN HE DIES AND DROPS HIS AMMO CLIP,
YOU CAN CATCH THE NEXT GROUP BY BACKING UP AND SHOOTING THE AMMO CLIP. IF AN
IMP IS NEAR THE EXPLOSION, HE WILL SLIDE A LITTLE DISTANCE AWAY BEFORE HE
BLOWS UP. THIS IS ALSO TRUE FOR BOTTLES AND HELMETS, WHICH WILL MOVE QUITE
A DISTANCE. IF THERE ARE TWO OF THEM LINED UP OUTSIDE AN OPEN DOORWAY,
SHOOTING THE ONE FURTHEST FROM THE DOOR WILL BLOW THE NEAR ONE THROUGH THE
DOORWAY INTO THE ROOM BEFORE IT EXPLODES. IN MANY PLACES YOU CAN SET OFF
DIFFERENT CHAIN REACTIONS DEPENDING ON WHAT YOU SHOOT FIRST. A SMALL ROOM
CROWDED WITH IMPS, TROOPERS, BOTTLES, HELMETS, AND/OR BARRELS CAN MAKE
HIROSHIMA LOOK LIKE A MINOR TRAFFIC ACCIDENT, SO IT'S BEST TO SHOOT FROM
OUTSIDE THE ROOM, IF POSSIBLE. TO HELP YOU NAVIGATE THIS MINEFIELD, SOME
OF THE GETTABLE ITEMS HAVE ALSO BEEN CHANGED. THE STIMPACKS ARE NOW
MEGASPHERES, THE "BERSERK" BOXES AND ARMOR ARE NOW BACKPACKS.
FEEL FREE TO ALTER ANY OF THIS IF YOU WISH, OR TO USE THIS FILE AS THE
BASIS FOR NEW ONES. I ESPECIALLY AM NOT SURE WHETHER I LIKE THE MASS OF
THE PLAYER (ORIGINALLY 100) OR NOT, AND AM STILL PLAYING WITH DIFFERENT
SETTINGS. I STARTED MY HACK BY REDUCING THE PLAYERS MASS TO 1, BUT HAVE
BEEN GRADUALLY INCREASING IT BECAUSE A SINGLE HIT FROM A PISTOL WOULD SEND
YOU FLYING OFF IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION. EVEN AT THE CURRENT SETTING IT
CAN BE DISORIENTING TO GET HIT FROM THE SIDE, AND THEN TRY TO FIGURE OUT
WHERE YOU GOT MOVED TO. IT DOES HAVE ONE ADVANTAGE, THOUGH - THE FIRST HIT
KNOCKS YOU AWAY FROM THE ATTACK. HAPPY FRAGGING.
